Officers Present: President, Bob Schmick; Vice President, Skip Coburn; Treasurer, Col. Kenneth Wilson; and Secretary, Marie Wiser.

Club Delegates: Dave Scull (Atlantic Regional Director), Sandra Lynch (WWW), Bob Wolfe (Freestate), Sue Kenyon (BWC), John Dye (Columbia), Sandi Cahill (WDCVC), Betty Davis (Annapolis), Jerry Baugher (Piedmont), Carolyn Thurber (Sugarloafers) and Tom Jackson (Keystone State Volkssport Assn.).

Attendees: Mike Quinlan, Ron Looper, Jone Parr, Maribeth Evans, Alice Filenger, Jeffrey Giddens, Lynne Haffner, Susan Osborn, Skip Magee.

The Meeting was called to order at 12:45 PM by President Bob Schmick who greeted all in attendance.

REPORTS

  1. Bob introduced Marie Wiser as MVA Wiser Interim Secretary. Minutes for the September 2013 MVA meeting were approved and accepted.

  2. Treasurers Report: Col. Ken Wilson stated that as of December 31, 2013, the MVA treasury has $2,521.85. The financial report includes three months of Ambler finances. Also included in the financial report are donations to MVA to be used for a memorial for Steve Arnett. It was the family's wish that condolence contributions be forwarded to MVA. Donations received through November were $1,320.00. In December an additional 55.00 was received. Bob took this opportunity to state that prior to the meeting, he spoke with Mike Quinlan who agreed to select a tree in Steve's honor, to be planted in Steve's community. MVA will also have a plaque made in Steve's honor. In the Fall of 2014, there will be a memorial walk in Cedarville. Ken stated that Capitol One bank no longer has a small business account. After a discussion of various banks and their fees, Ken stated we will close our account with Capitol One and open a new account with Wells Fargo. As long as we maintain $500.00 balance per month, there will be no fees charged. Distance and Event books are available from Ken, as well as start cards. The Treasury Report was voted accepted as submitted.

  3. Meet-Up: 450 folks are currently signed up and will receive walk email notices one week and the day before an Event.

  4. Web Site: Jim McDonald is ill and advised he is no longer able to support the MVA website. Nancy Stenger has volunteered to support our website. John Dye asked whether Rich Long will prepare the calendar for all clubs our entire region. The events are posted on our Website.

  5. Rediscover Maryland: Bob presented 2013 Certificates to several members who walked all the 26 counties in Maryland.

OLD BUSINESS

  1. After approximately one year of dealing with the IRS, the Annapolis Amblers were reinstated to our 501c3 status, which has been back dated to 11/15/2010.

  2. YRE figures due to Col. Wilson, on January 31, 2014. All YRE's were renewed except the Baltimore Mercy Hospital and Mt. Airy walks. Club Presidents, please remind your POC'S to send those stamps to AVA headquarters.

NEW BUSINESS

  1. Memorial Walks for Ron Bowers, Karl Frock and Steve Arnett. Further details below.

  2. Checkpoint. Club Presidents please ensure that your members are receiving the AVA Checkpoint newsletters.

  3. NEC Meeting. Atlantic Regional Director Dave Scull said Ms. Stephanie Sinclair, pending final approval, will be the new Executive Director. The NEC will vote on a new program to provide add’l income clubs for increasing participation at Traditional events.

  4. Baltimore Health Fair. Sue Kenyon requested workers please volunteer for this event to be held at the Baltimore Convention Center on 3/1/14. Please contact Sue at suethewalker@comcast.net.

  5. Reminder to have your club post event pictures on AVA’s Facebook page.

  6. Atlantic Regional Conference. Tom Jackson provided brochures for the Atlantic Regional Convention set for March 14-16. There will be three walks and one swim. Each day has a 'featured' walk, and any of the three walks may be walked each day. There is no registration fee charged. Donations are being accepted for an auction. Bob reminded everyone that we will need a hosting club for the 2016 Regional Convention.

  7. Bob stressed the importance of your club meetings having a balance between business matters and fun, such as activities, parties at holidays, etc.

CLUB REPORTS

Annapolis Amblers: Betty Davis stated the Amblers will host three events: 25th Anniversary event in April -- date to be determined. June 21 Walk and Bike Event in Terrapin Park, and December 13, Lighted Boat Parade.

Baltimore Walking Club: Sue Kenyon said there is an Event on March 1, Baltimore Health Fair; Du Burns March 22; and September 13, Battle of Baltimore, Dundalk Visitor Center.

Columbia: John Dye said the Columbia club will host a spring event at Western Regional Park, an event at Centennial Park in July, a Fall event at Belmont Mansion/Patapsco State Park. Other events are in the planning stage.

Freestate: Bob Wolfe stated FHW hosted two events at Owen Brown -- Dec. 31 and Jan. 1; on January 19, a social dinner to celebrate the club's 30th anniversary; April 24 thru 27, Western Maryland walks; May 24 and 25, two events at Savage; September 6 event-- the 9/11 Memorial walk.

Greenbelt: No report nor representative at this meeting.

Keystone State Volkssport Assn. : Tom said the York walk originally set for February 8 has been moved to Feb. 1. New Freedom, June 7, is the Memorial Walk for Ron Bowers. Oct./ 17-19.Walk, Fall foliage weekend.

Piedmont Pacers: Jerry Baugher said the clubs YRE's have been renewed through 2014, except for Mt. Airy. At the end of 2014, the Club will cease. On June 7, there will be a memorial walk in Westminster to honor Karl Frock. June 18-21 at Columbia River George, there will be numerous walks. Clubs in MD and PA can apply to Piedmont in order to transfer these YRE’s to their clubs for 2015.

Seneca Valley Sugarloafers: Carolyn said on Jan 18, the club has an Event at the C & O Canal; March 14-May 15 Cherry Blossoms, Kenwood; April 5, new event in Gaithersburg.

Washington DC: Sandi Cahill said beginning the fourth Monday in April, the Club will host the series of five evening Alexandria walks.

WorldWide Walking Club: Sandy Lynch said there are three events set for January 2014: Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and Key West.
